Variable frequency drives (VFD) are reliable electronic devices that control three-phase electric motor speed. They are used in building automation applications to control the speed of fans and pumps in various systems.
Variable Frequency Drives reduce costs by:
- Reduce power used
- Without VFD facilities will install capacitor banks which cleans up the power and saves approx 3-5%. VFD does same job plus benefits below.
- Save on wear and tear on equipment
- You do not peak the demand meter
- When you start a 3 phase motor it runs at LRA (approx 3 times RLA) for about 3 seconds and then settles down at RLAs. Commercial customers are billed per peak demand. A VFD ramps up the start so that you never go above the RLA.
Most VFD installations will pay for themselves quickly, normally payback will occur in less than three years, usually within 12-18 months.
